‘Love Actually’ Writer Reveals What Happened Between Emma and Alan’s Characters

It’s a question that has plagued Love Actually fans for 12 years — did Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman’s married characters stay together after he was caught having an affair with his secretary?

Emma Freud, a script editor for the film who’s also married to the Love Actually writer and director Richard Curtis, recently live-tweeted during a midnight screening of the holiday classic. And lucky for fans, she revealed what so many viewers have wondered over the years.

First, Freud confirmed that Rickman’s character Harry actually did have a full-on affair with his secretary (played by Heike Makatsch), although in the film, it’s never shown.

« Did anyone ask if Harry ACTUALLY had an affair or was just tempted to? » a Twitter user asks, to which Freud replies, « DEFINITELY had an affair. I begged Richard just to make it a flirtation, but no. The whole way. »

  1. To the most exciting actor in the universe, you were one in a trillion.
This world is now far sadder.losing a great man,a great actor, even more greater human being.
    REST IN PEACE my friend.
Every part you played was written for a star like you.

    • I’ve never cried because of a person who has died and which I didn’t know actually. Alan was the most interesting actor for me. I waited for a new Film – but instead, my mother informed me that he’s dead. I’m sad and my thought are with Rima and his family. Even if I don’t know them. (But I didn’t knew Alan als well… and I cried.) R.I.P.

  2. When I think of Alan and this great loss, I ponder a lyric to one of my favorite Elton John songs, « Your Song ». « How Wonderful Life Is, While You’re In the World ». There is no « wonderful » right now….no light…knowing that Alan is no longer with us on this planet. My heart broke when I heard this new yesterday morning. I had a connection to him and his acting, the amazing, one-of-a-kind person that he was, both personal and professional… that I cannot explain. He touched my life greatly through his art, his gentility, his wit and humor, his impeccable sage way of connecting and speaking, his sensitivity…and that wonderful voice—through his characters and as a man in general. He should have had much more time..not only for himself, but to continue what he did best…to touch and penetrate the world with his abilities so vast and poignant. I can not imagine what his family and friends are going through right now, how much they must miss him already. I did not know him personally, nor did I get th honor of meeting him in life(something I had always hoped I would have the chance to do)– yet I can not shake this sadness…this guttoral emptiness. I will always love him, cherish him and remember him….not only for the paramount gifts he gave us as an actor, but also as the wonderful man he was…what a true gift he was to this world. It will never be the same. Rest with the angels, Alan. God be with your beloved family and friends as they search for the way to live without you. <3 <3 <3

Goodbye Alan Rickman, a man of dry wit/humour. An excellent actor, and will be well missed by many . RIP Alan.

  4. Such a brilliant, talented man, you will never be forgotten, but you will always be missed. Rest in Peace Alan Rickman – the world won’t be the same without you. You’re a star in the heavens now, so keep shining bright

  5. For me, I loved the way Alan Rickman made something truly special out of every part he played whether large or small. He was unique in his manner and that unforgettable voice. He could convey enormous sensitivity, but was also manly and strong. I feel terribly sad about his death because for me, he was still in his prime and he had more to give. Also now that we have heard more about the way he lived his life, he seems to be what may be called an actor’s actor. He loved his profession and enhanced its meaning for others. He also truly cared about individual people as well as society as a whole and he longed to see wrongs righted. All these characteristics add up to making him a very fine human being that I am grateful to have seen on tv and in film although sadly, I did not see him on stage.

  7. We haven’t truly lost this great man for he will always reside in our hearts and minds, and as we re-watch the movies he made and re-read about the incredibly acts of kindness he did, we will wipe a tear from our eyes as a tribute to his greatness.
To his family, my deepest sympathies for you have lost a treasured soul from your midst, but his memory will always linger on for he will always be with you in spirit so just talk to him and he will still hear you. True hearts never die, they become a part all those they love and hold dear.
Be at peace Alan, we will all miss you dearly.
