‘I Just Kissed Him Goodbye’ Emma Thompson’s Moving Tribute to Her Close Friend Alan Rickman

As the world mourns the death of British stage and screen star Alan Rickman, one of his closest friends and frequent collaborators is grappling with the loss.

Emma Thompson, who appeared with Rickman in several films, including Love Actually, three Harry Potter films, Sense and Sensibility and 1998 crime thriller Judas Kiss said in a statement that saying goodbye to the 69-year-old Rickman was « painful. »

« Alan was my friend and so this is hard to write because I have just kissed him goodbye, » Thompson, 56, wrote. « What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humour, intelligence, wisdom and kindness. The intransigence which made him the great artist he was – his ineffable and cynical wit, the clarity with which he saw most things, including me, and the fact that he never spared me the view. »

  1. I have seen Alan in several movies and I think he was an awesome actor.
    He will be missed

  2. This doesn’t address the question you say (in the headline and first paragraph) is answered — unless there’s a non-obvious « read the rest of the story » link. Not sure whether it’s crappy reporting or crappy web design, but either way I’m not impressed.

I am so saddened, I loved this talented man. He took me from tears to laughter in a heartbeat. His voice was hypnotic. Somehow I sensed the good person, the kindness in him, and admired him so. I will miss him. Thank you Alan for the passion for life, the feelings.I will remember you. Always.

  4. THAT voice. That restrained, lazy growl..just magic. Will miss that voice that commands full attention.Very sad.

  5. Alan was the best bad guy ever. Hans Gruber, the diabolical villan in « Die Hard » really made that movie great. I’m sure Bruce Willis will admit that he owes some of his success to Alan’s fabulous portrayal.

Thank you Alan for giving us your amazing talent and for mastering the roles that will now live in the worlds memories forever.

January Man was my introduction to the wonder of Alan Rickman. Such an underrated actor. He should have gotten an Oscar as Severus Snape or even Hans Gruber. I am totally in mourning.

Alan Rickman was a brilliant actor and exceptional person. I am deeply saddened by his passing and I send my condolences to his wife and family for their great loss.
I will always enjoy his performances in film… that remarkable voice and how he delivered a line so skillfully, or the looks he gave that were comical at times. He was an original. Bless you Alan, you were loved by so many and you will be sorely missed.

  13. Worshipped this hypnotic actor from afar over many years. So hard to think of his passing. Would like to thank him for all the laughter, tears, hours of pleasure and send my heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and friends. The world will be a darker place without his light and that oh so spine tingling voice. « Always »
